The Tulsa Teaching Garden opens on Tuesday after being closed for the winter.
Gardeners, like Tatum Thrasher, are returning to their pots and beds.
"I am pulling up any weeds or unwanted plants that are growing through the cracks here so when people come to visit it'll be nice and clean,” Thrasher said.
This is not just a garden people can walk through, it's also a classroom.
"The teaching garden has been in a winter slumber we have been closed for most of the winter and open up tomorrow, Tuesday back to the public for the spring and summer seasons,” Andy Fusco, Director of Horticulture, said.
Fusco and volunteers like Thrasher maintain the garden and share their knowledge with anyone who stops by. One of the goals of the teaching garden is to inspire others to start their own gardens at home.
"I always think of Tulsa as Green Country for a reason because we have a long history of gardens and our natural environment here in Tulsa,” Fusco said. “This garden really showcases how much you can do in a small space so there really is no excuse to plant something green this spring."
As the gardens open back up, Thrasher hopes people will see everything the center has to offer—like workshops and festivals.
"I think it's really important to be able to offer something like this to our community and to let people know that gardening is a really healing thing,” Thrasher said. “Whether it's their first time here or hundredth time here, I want people to understand that this is important work.”
The teaching garden will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M.
