As severe weather season approaches, veterinarians are warning pet owners about how to keep their pets safe.
Veterinarians say it is so important to keep your animals relaxed during severe weather, and it is important to remember that pets can sense a person's emotions and also react off of that.
Keeping your pets indoors is the best thing to do during a big storm, but if you can't do that, make sure they are in a well-secured yard and have a shelter like a dog house.
Proper identification is also crucial, so be sure to microchip your pets.
Another recommendation is to have a storm safety kit with extra food, water, and blankets. If your dog is on any medication, make sure to have extra.
Ann Hubbert with Midtown Vets said it is important to keep pets relaxed and to look for signs they may show distress.
"The pet starts pacing, the animal may go and hide and the may be coming up to you. That may indicate that something big is coming up and you know to make steps," Hubbert said.
Once the storm has passed Hubbert recommends checking the area for any place that may have debris in the way that can be harmful to your pet.
