News 9’s Bobbie Miller will be running in the marathon this year with her two sons.
Bobbie shows us how she and her boys stay connected through the run to remember.
Merritt Miller is learning how to drive. This driving scenario is a real-life metaphor for how quickly children leave their parents' arms and embrace independence.
“I like it. My mom's really antsy whenever I drive. But I mean, it still goes pretty well,” said Merritt.
“They're 15 and 13…teenagers, and that means they're growing up, which is normal. It's a natural thing. I love that for them. It's fun to watch them gain their independence and do more things. But it kind of hurts your mama's heart too because they're breaking away from you,” said Bobbie.
Bobbie says that teaching them to drive is another milestone to help them spread their wings. There is something in this coming-of-age stage that's keeping them together.
Bobbie has enjoyed running for many years most of her life, and now her sons like it too.
Mark Bravo, well known as the color commentator for the Memorial Marathon has become one of the Miller’s family friends.
“He's taken an interest in my boy's new love of running and always has words of advice when you start,” said Bobbie.
“Don't go out at a five-minute pace because you'll be able to, you'll be so juiced up and you want to enjoy the ride,” Bravo explained.
Running the racecourse is a part of being in Oklahoma. Bobbie says that it’s an honor, to be able to race alongside her children.
