Neighbors in the area say the gunfire is almost a daily occurrence and the violence is out of control. "Why does everything have to be violent these days? It's sad," Elizabeth Helms, a resident at the Will Rogers Court Apartments said.
"You had multiple shooters and this little girl just happened to be outside playing in the same area," OCPD Lt. Jeff Cooper said.
Police say that's when the child was caught in the crossfire. "There was a vehicle exchanging gunfire with several people on foot and during that exchange of gunfire this little girl was shot in the face," Cooper said.
The victim's family didn't want to talk on camera but said the little girl was doing okay.
Her stepmother says she was playing in the front yard of their home when the family members inside heard gunfire. According to her, the 7-year-old came running inside the home holding her face and screaming that she'd been shot.
She said the bullet shattered the girl’s jaw and left 2 to 3 bullet fragments behind. She's stable but will undergo a two-day surgery process to repair her jaw.
While the family moves forward with recovery, police are still searching for those responsible.
"We've also been canvassing this entire area, knocking on doors, talking to people, asking if they've seen anything or know anything, shots fired anything like that," Cooper said.
No arrests have been made, but police are looking for several people in connection to the shooting.
