Out of the three films opening this week, one deals with love, rivalry and tennis, another deals with revenge, resilience and survival, but our Movie Man is starting with the one that deals with faith, family and music.
Unsung Hero
This is the true story of David Smallbone and his family. His successful music company fails. He moves his family from Australia to Nashville to rebuild their lives. With their seven children, some suitcases, and a love of music, David and his pregnant wife Helen struggle to search for a better life. But Helen inspires her husband and children to hold on to their faith against all odds. They begin to see their children’s musical talents, and after years of struggle, a couple of them become two of the most successful acts in inspirational music history who are also five-time Grammy award-winning artists for KING & COUNTRY and Rebecca St. James. Executive producer Candace Cameron Bure, one of the cast members in the film, told our Movie Man recently that this is not the kind of film where someone says a prayer, and everything gets better immediately. It’s praying, then working through the highs and lows.
“This is real life. God is not a genie in a bottle. You don’t snap your fingers, and he all of a sudden makes things perfect because you’ve said a prayer in your life,” she said. “It’s important to produce films that are grounded in reality, that are relatable. And that’s what this film is. So, we don’t shy away from showing the hardships and the humility that we all need at times and showing the struggle.”
Our Movie Man thoroughly enjoyed the inspirational movie Unsung Hero, which opens this weekend.
Challengers
The R-rated movie ‘Challengers’ stars Zendaya as a former tennis prodigy who retires after an injury and later marries a tennis champion on a losing streak. She plots his comeback, which takes a turn after he must face off against another player, who happens to be his former best friend and her former lover.
Boy Kills World
Boy Kills World is a gruesome revenge thriller starring Bill Skarsgård. The movie follows Bill as a martial arts expert who was rendered deaf by an attack that killed his entire family and vows to take vengeance. Boy Kills World is rated R.
