'A Walking Miracle': Oklahoma Senate Pro Tem Greg Treat Discusses Son's Role In Marathon Following Near-Fatal Crash

Oklahoma Senate Pro Tem Greg Treat and his son, Mason, were among the many Oklahomans at the finish line of the 2024 Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon.

Treat spoke about his son's recovery after a vehicle crash in January, and how far he had come to be able to participate in this year's race. Though not running, Greg and Mason stood at the finish line of the marathon to hand out medals to each person crossing the finish line.

"He's a walking miracle," Treat said. "He wanted to be out here handing out medals to these people, who are miracles."

On Jan. 5, Mason had been pulled over along the side of Interstate 40 by an Oklahoma County Sheriff's deputy Jose Mendoza when another vehicle crashed into him, hospitalizing Mason and injuring Mendoza. The driver of the other vehicle was also taken to the hospital.

"I'm doing good," Mason said. "I'm really grateful to be able to stand up and give them a medal."

Regarding his son's treatment, Greg Treat said three months prior, Mason was unable to walk, and now is able to work out physically and be here in time for the marathon.

"We've been volunteering out here for years," Greg Treat said. "It just means so much to us. I'm not a runner but this is the way I can help."
