Attorney General Gentner Drummond has filed a proposed settlement on a class-action lawsuit against the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, according to a press release Monday.
Drummond says this could deliver justice for crime victims, and save the state millions by ensuring 'due process for criminal defendants who have been deemed "not competent” to stand trial.'
In March 2023, representatives of four people with mental illness alleged that the ODMHSAS violated rights by failing to provide court-ordered competency restoration services, according to the press release.
In Monday's filing, Drummond proposed a plan to improve ODMHSAS' restoration services.
Drummond says he is hopeful that Governor Kevin Stitt and legislative leaders will approve the proposal, according to the release.
