Soul Survivors Living Foundation is a home for veterans, the homeless, and those fighting addictions, turning women who are struggling into women who are survivors.
“Soul Survivors is a supportive living home, supporting and serving she-roes,” said Ella Jefferson-Speed, founder of Soul Survivors Supportive Living Foundation.
She started the nonprofit in 2019, opening the survivor home two years later.
“I visited a lot of sober living homes, and I would see about fifteen to twenty men, and one sister,” said Jefferson-Speed
It was the moment she realized her calling. “Right then it was a light bulb moment, we need our own space,” said Jefferson-Speed
She started renovations on the 3,500-square-foot home in Midwest City, making it a home for women in need.
“I realized my life was a hot mess and I had to get my stuff together,” said Survivor home resident Krista.
Krista came to the survivor home after years of substance abuse. She has tried other programs but none of them worked for her. “The neat thing about Ms. Ella’s program is she doesn’t call it sober living, it’s supportive living,” said Krista.
Requirements for the residents are to work as well as volunteer and attend substance abuse meetings. “We have a lot of accountability,” said Krista.
April is recently out of recovery with no place to go, the accountability at the survivor house has kept her sober. “The environment, the support, and being held accountable, just on every level,” said Survivor home resident April.
Jefferson-Speed’s passion for the home comes from a very personal place. “I’m a disabled vet, I was homeless, I had sobriety challenges. I’m thirty-nine years clean and sober from crack cocaine.
Support for the home is much needed. “We give back a lot and we need some things too,” said Jefferson-Speed.
The foundation is in need of volunteers and financial support, for more information about the foundation or to support visit www.urasurvivor.org.
