A Tulsa woman found the ingredients to turn her life around and stay out of prison. She's part of a program that helps women in recovery.

That's just how the cookie crumbles: a saying that means someone must accept things the way they are.

Korie Grandberry was tired of that.

"I was ready for change. I was ready for something different, and so I came in with a willingness," she said. "I didn't know how I was going to do the program or get through it. It was overwhelming, but I was willing to do whatever it took."

After struggling with addiction, being homeless, and facing time in prison, Korie Grandberry joined the Women in Recovery program in 2021.

"You come into the program with no hope," she said.

That changed for Korie throughout the course of the almost two-year program.

With conquering her addiction came the chance to change her life, and part of that change was finding employment.

Since being a part of the program, Korie has worked for Heather Matheson and her business "Peace Love and Cookies."

"It was really important to me that it had a giving back component to it," Matheson said.

Every employee of Heather's is a woman going through Woman in Recovery. They bake and package every cookie at the facility.

Heather says supporting these women like Korie is the sweetest part of the job.

"We all know an addict," Matheson said. "Whether it's in our family or community or our friends, we all know somebody. But to hear their struggles, so many of the women come from really difficult circumstances, and to see the changes in them and the healing that takes place during this. I love this piece of it."

It hasn't been easy, but Korie didn't settle.

"I knew that I had more in me, and I knew I had more to offer. I have a purpose to get up every day and maintain the life I worked so hard to have right now," she said.

Using her story--and cookies--to inspire others.

"I guess the lesson is there is always hope. There is always hope," said Matheson.
