Oklahoma City Police are investigating a carjacking that ended in a deadly crash.
Police say the suspect took the car from the victim near Northwest 39th Street and Portland Avenue around 11 a.m. Wednesday and minutes later that same car crashed in southwest Oklahoma City.
After the carjacking, police say the car was spotted traveling at a high rate of speed. Officers followed the car to the entrance of the Meto Tech Aviation Campus on South MacArthur Boulevard and Southwest 54th Street.
“The vehicle was traveling past the officer at a high rate of speed and so he, his instincts kicked in and he realized that it didn't look quite right so he followed, was able to get eyes on that vehicle before it crashed out,” said Msgt. Dillon Quirk with the Oklahoma City Police Department.
Police say the car veered off the roadway, flipped, and landed on its top, killing the person in the car.
Investigators blocked off the area while they worked gathering evidence. Police have confirmed the car is the same one that was involved in the carjacking, but they are not confirming if the person who died was the suspect in the carjacking.
“We don't know if that was the suspect involved at this time,” MSgt Quirk said. “We're still waiting to identify who that person is, make next of kin notifications, and then follow up during the investigation with that victim.”
Police say nobody else was injured in the crash or carjacking.
