As we head into the 2024 high school football season, there is no secret who the favorite is: Carl Albert.
The Titans are coming off a second straight state title, the program's 7th championship in the last eight seasons.
There is some turnover in Midwest City this year. The Titans have three quarterbacks vying for the starting job, and Cody Voelker is the only returning offensive lineman. The strength of this team could be the defense. OU Football commits Trystan Haynes and Trynae Washington will anchor the secondary, while fellow future Sooner Marcus James is a hard-hitting linebacker.
As the Titans begin the quest for a 'three-peat', and an 18th overall state title, the guys know every team on the schedule will try to play the spoiler.
Head Coach Mike Dunn says, "The guys know that we have a target on our backs, and we like to keep the guys with that kind of edge. We want them to know that everyone wants to beat them."
"All week, every week, our coaches tell us, 'they want to beat y'all'. So, that is how we come here and practice. We practice knowing we have a target on our back," adds Washington.
Haynes agrees, "We know we are going to be everybody's best game. The team they want to beat. So, when you work with that mindset every game, every practice, every everything, you're able to take on those challenges."
This senior class already has two rings, but they feel like it would be a major letdown if they don't go out on top.
Coach Dunn says, "This senior class has done a lot of good things, but we tell them, don't let there be a 'but'. When they start talking about you they say, 'That was a really talented group, lots of potential, but.' Don't let there be a 'but'."
Washington says it is simple, "Be phenomenal or be forgotten."
Carl Albert starts the season against Midwest City on September 6.
