The Democratic National Convention is taking place in Chicago this week, and dozens of Oklahomans are there representing the state's delegation.
The chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party said this is the most diverse and youngest delegation that the state has sent since at least the 80s.
Delegates News On 6 talked to said they feel a positive energy and are excited to represent Oklahoma.
The 41 delegates all stay at the same hotel and have breakfast together each morning before they split up.
Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair, Alicia Andrews, said everyone is energized.
“We have folks from four different Native American tribes, we have a healthy smattering of African Americans, Asian folks, young folks, labor people,” said Andrews.
As for security, Andrews said it is beefed up but does not feel intrusive.
She has also seen protesters and counter protesters outside the convention.
“I wasn't concerned for my safety,” said Andrews. “I wasn't concerned for their safety. It was just natural freedom of speech.”
It is the first DNC for Crystal LaGrone, chair of Wagoner County Democrats.
She said she wants to better represent and get resources for rural Oklahoma.
“Last night, I just felt like somebody needed to pinch me because it's just so amazing,” said LaGrone. “Just walking through and seeing people that you have seen on TV, getting to meet leaders current and former.”
LaGrone said she hopes to learn at different caucus sessions, and she is most excited to hear President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris speak.
“I can tell you I packed tissues in my bag today because I feel like the tears will flow,” said LaGrone. “I'm just so very humbled to be here.”
Each delegate pays for their own travel and hotel expenses, and some people fundraise for the trip.
