Oklahoma's fiber and yarn community is kicking off the fall-making season with the first-ever Oklahoma Yarn Crawl.
Twelve stores are participating, including Shepherd's Cross in Claremore.
A visit to the working farm is like stepping back in time. Its makers use ancient fiber arts techniques like loom weaving, drop spindles, needle felting, and a spinning wheel.
"We do not want the book to die with the people," said owner Dr. Diane Dickinson. "Passing those skills forward, such as washing and dying yarn, spinning yarn on a drop spindle or spinning wheel, weaving, and those types of fiber arts skills are very important."
Shepherd's Cross is one of the more unique stops on the Oklahoma Yarn Crawl. The farm raises its own sheep and processes their wool into the colorful yarn that lines its store shelves.
Customers can buy the yarn and take various classes to learn how it is made.
"We can help new people learn these fiber arts skills and we can encourage those that know the fiber arts skills to continue in them, and then to teach those to other people as well," said Dr. Dickinson.
Those interested in taking a class must register online here or call the farm store.
The Oklahoma Yarn Crawl is going on now through August 24th.
At the first store you visit you will get a postcard with all twelve participating stores on it. Each store you visit counts as one entry into a giveaway to win prizes.
Other stops in Green Country on the yarn crawl are Community Fibers in Claremore, Carrico's Creative Corner in Bartlesville, and Get Stitchin' in Tulsa.
