Bixby Police To Crack Down On School Zone Violations

It's the first day of school for Bixby, and police are warning drivers to slow down around students. Officers say there will be no tolerance for breaking traffic laws in school zones this year. 

Police say they always take traffic laws seriously around schools, and they aren't taking any excuses this year when it comes to safety.

Class is back in session in Bixby, and that means traffic around schools is ramping back up. 

“The line is long, but I would rather it be that way because they know where each child goes,” said one grandparent picking up students.

Bixby Police say speeding in school zones has always been a big issue. That's why they're taking a no-tolerance approach.

“One over in the school zone is not tolerable, and that's why at the Bixby Police Department, we're not tolerating it, so if a school zone says 25 miles per hour, it's 25 miles per hour, and we got to obey it,” said Officer Jim Vazquez.

He parks his car along this trail a lot to catch people speeding. He says that just because people haven't been used to school zones all summer, they need to read signs and pay attention. 

“We're right in front of Bixby North Intermediate and North Elementary, so this is a common place where we see speeders, and this is where I park my car normally, and I get speeders coming to me and away from me,” he said.

“They're unpredictable sometimes. Sometimes they see something, and they're like, oh, squirrel, and they want to run into the street or something; that's why it's so important.”

Bixby Police also want people to know that when a bus stops on the side of a busy road, all directions have to stop unless it's on a highway divided by a median.
