Housekeepers from several Tulsa-area hotels got the chance to put their bed-making skills to the test. The competition is part of a celebration for International Housekeeper’s Week.

It was a gameday-like atmosphere inside the Renaissance Hotel near 71st and Memorial as housekeeping staff from 18 hotels took turns making their grand entrances. While the competitors raced to make the perfect bed in a decent time, their co-workers cheered from the sidelines with signs, drums, and smiles.

“I had so much fun making this bed,” said Wanda Childs, a housekeeper at the Hyatt Regency in Tulsa. “I finally placed. I am just happy.”

Childs took home second place. It was her second time competing, but she has 16 years of experience.

“I do it every day, so it’s not a problem,” she said.

Each of the 18 contestants was judged on how quickly they made the bed and also had points added and subtracted in other areas, including how straight the sheets were, if the corners were tucked in, and if a mint was placed on the pillow. News On 6 reporter Cal Day served as one of the judges.

The Tulsa Metro Hotel Lodging Association, which is made up of several Tulsa-area hotels, put on the contest. A record-breaking crowd of more than 200 housekeepers were in attendance.

“Not only do the contestants look forward to it, co-workers come to celebrate them, cheer them on,” said Alan Tenzythoff, president of the association. “It’s just a great way for everyone to get together.”

An award was also given to the staff with the best spirit. As for Childs, she’s ready to try it again.

“I’m going to take first place next year, how about that?” she said.

The housekeepers were also treated to lunch. First place went to Jennifer from the Tulsa Marriott Southern Hills, who had the fastest time of 43 seconds.
