The USS Batfish Celebrates 81 Years Since Commissioning

The USS Batfish was commissioned 81 years ago on Aug. 21, 1943.

The submarine is 312 feet long and 27 feet wide.

It earned nine battle stars and a Presidential Unit Citation during World War II.

The submarine and its crew sank 14 Japanese ships and damaged three others between December 1943 and August 1945.

The USS Batfish was decommissioned in April 1946.

After retirement, it operated as a training ship for six years.

The USS Batfish is now on display in Muskogee.
