Going to college can be a nervous time for many first-year students, but a university in Green Country helped make the transition a little easier.

Rogers State University hosted its annual “Welcome Week” for students to get more familiar with one another and learn about what they can find on campus.

It was an exciting day for students at Rogers State University as they explored many of the clubs and organizations on campus.

“Today is big tent day!” said Karalyn Ryan.

It's an annual event to help students learn about all the things they can get involved in.

“I always come out here. There are all kinds of free fun stuff and then it's also nice to hear about new churches or organizations I might want to get into,” Ryan said.

Ryan is a sophomore at RSU. This is her second time at Big Tent Day.

“OK, I'm going to unload for you,” she said. “First thing we have today is a 'Twisters' poster cause that's to die for.”

Ryan looked at several organizations, but one of her favorite parts was adding some new items to her closet.

“I got a fusion shirt, never too many shirts. I love to have a good shirt,” she said.

But it wasn't just a day the students looked forward to.

“Oh, it's one of the best events we have!” said Ronna Hatley.

Whether it was a political group, a sorority, or just getting their hands on some ramen noodles, Hatley said there was something for each student.

“They get to meet people around the community. They get to see different groups they can get involved with. Maybe they're not doing anything on campus but seeing a group that maybe has their interest, like gaming or something like that, they can sign up and get to know those other students in their same area,” she said.

Students like Karalyn loved the free stuff.

“I love the free food, but I also like the free fun posters.”

It might have been small to some, but it was those little things that could help RSU feel more like home for every Hillcat.

“Go Rogers State!” said Ryan.

RSU's annual “Welcome Week” runs through Aug. 23, 2024, with a student event in downtown Claremore on Thursday and a movie on the lawn on Friday.
