The Thunder Fellows Program gives black high school and college students in the Tulsa area opportunities in sports, entertainment, and technology. They are now accepting applications for this school year’s cohort.

Saniaa Moore was one of the 30 students selected for last year’s group. Moore is now headed off to college at Oral Roberts University to start her freshman year.

“When adulthood comes around, I am going to have to keep grinding, keep moving to get those opportunities because the world isn't going to wait for me,” Moore said. “If I want to flourish, bloom, and truly help people, I know I have to put myself out there and try the uncomfortable things.”

Moore feels prepared for this new milestone because of the lessons she learned by being a part of the Thunder Fellows.

“It allowed me to gain so many resources that I lacked,” Moore said. “That I didn't have. Just how I dress in a business way, how I am talking, am I availing myself, am I on time. Everything that Thunder Fellows has taught me has been tools to teach me how to be an adult.”

Moore and other students like Eliott Oakley met twice a week for 30 weeks for the program.

The curriculum focuses on data science, but at its core, it teaches these kids about problem-solving, networking, and how to communicate effectively.

“The hard lessons we are learning now,” Oakley said. “Getting them out the way so I am not learning them once I get to college. I will be prepared. I will be prepared to email professors; I will be prepared to study the syllabus on time because I went through these hardships now, and this program has taught me a lot about procrastination and prioritizing the right things.”

The deadline to apply for this year’s cohort is August 31st. To apply, click here.
