A Tulsa dog trainer is growing his local business into a national franchise.
Tip Top K9 was founded by Ryan Wimpey in 2010. Wimpey got into dog training to help a Schnauzer Terrier mix he had adopted from a local shelter.
“Every behavioral problem that we literally help people with, he had,” Wimpey continued saying, “So, it just got me searching for answers on what I could do to help Curly out.”
He uses a classical conditioning method with his four-legged students.
“Instead of offering conditioning of reward or punishment we classically condition the dog for their obedience,” Wimpey said. “Once a trainer has conditioned the dog how to elicit that response, it is very easy to transfer.”
The goal at Tip Top K9 is to teach commands that anyone can do.
“If I cannot teach a 9-year-old to do it or a 90-year-old to do it, then we at Tip Top do not do it,” added Wimpey.
His style and use of repetition is what Wimpey said sets Tip Top K9 apart from other dog training services and has allowed the business to grow.
“Originally we were excited just to grow in Oklahoma,” he continued saying, “Once my wife came on board, we were able to really scale the business to 19 locations across the United States and we have a few more in the works.”
With all the exciting things ahead, Wimpey has not lost sight of why he loves his work.
“I have the best job in the world,” he said. “I help people enjoy their dog, we keep dogs out of shelters and out of the backyard and live their best life.”
