Incumbent Wagoner County Sheriff Chris Elliott won his primary runoff Tuesday night.
The unofficial votes show 35 votes splitting the difference between Sheriff Elliott and his challenger.
The sheriff is seeking his third term, first elected back in 2016.
Challenger Tyler Cooper is a former Wagner County Deputy who actually served under Sheriff Chris Elliott as a current GRDA Lieutenant.
The numbers were much closer than anticipated, especially according to Sheriff Elliott. The final result, of course, was unofficially 50.2 to 49.8, and the sheriff says this was a really big sign of how important it is to get out there and exercise your right to vote.
"We didn't predict this. We thought we'd be a little bit farther ahead of the game than that. At the end of the day, I respect the process. The people in this county voted. Unofficially, I'm ahead by 35 votes. I don't know when it's going to be certified; I mean, we're calling it right now," said Elliott.
News On 6 reached out to Tyler Cooper to try to get his reaction to Tuesday night’s result. He did not answer our call, and when asked if we could attend his watch party tonight, he told us no.
