As people remember the 9/11 attacks around the country many participate in a day of service.

Here in Tulsa, Food On The Move is hosting volunteers from AARP at their community gardens.

Machael Loghry remembers what happened on 9/11 23 years ago in her own way.

“I am pretty sure I was teaching school,” Loghry said. “I didn't turn the television on because I did for the Murrah building and that just disturbed all of us, so I know on the 9/11 day I did not have the TV on in class.”

The event has had a lasting impact on Loghry.

“9/11, the Murrah building bombing, all of those things are just senseless tragedies that never should have happened,” Loghry said.

She feels compelled to do more than just remember by getting her hands dirty and volunteering with AARP to harvest produce and plant new ones.

Food On The Move received a $16,000 AARP Community Challenge Grant earlier this year which went to expanding its community gardens.

Regan Leake, Development Director for Food On The Move, is thankful for this partnership.

“We are proud to have this partnership with them and grateful to this grant that allowed us to have this partnership and watch it grow,” Leake said.

Once the produce is harvested from these gardens, it will go to families who live in food deserts with the goal to end food insecurity.

“I just feel like it's everyone’s duty to maybe volunteer and give to help others who can't do for themselves,” Loghry said. “So if we can give back as a way, if that encourages people to give back then something good can come out of something horrible.”

She hopes that Something Good will ripple out into communities and help others grow.

“There was nothing we could do to help any of those people,” Loghry said. “We can't help them, but we can help others now. We can pay it forward and do our part.”
