The Woody Guthrie Center presented an award to singer, songwriter, and activist Tom Morello at Cain's Ballroom on Wednesday.
The Grammy-winning musician cofounded Rage Against the Machine.
Morello talked about the moment things changed for him when he was encouraged to tone down his music and then got dropped from his label.
“I was 27 years old, I had had my chance, and I failed miserably. I was never going to be a rock star. but I was still a musician. on the day that lockup broke up, I made a solemn vow that I've kept, I was never going to play another note of music I didn't believe in," Morello said.
Woody Guthrie's granddaughter Anna Canoni presented Morello with the annual award to recognize his contributions to music and activism.
