A mother and daughter in Bixby are facing thousands of dollars in home repairs after they believe they were targeted by a TikTok trend known as the "door kick challenge."
Security footage from a neighbor in the Conrad Farms neighborhood captured a group of individuals kicking at the Mathis family's garage door. The video offers a glimpse into the frightening incident Shelby and Michelle Mathis say occurred one night in September.
"We still have these [foot] prints a month later," said Shelby Mathis.
The mother and daughter, still shaken by the event, initially thought it was a prank. However, the situation quickly escalated, leading them to fear it was an attempted home invasion.
"I'm talking about full-body force of multiple individuals, as hard as they can, pounding, kicking, banging, jiggling door handles," said Shelby.
They described how the intruders hit the garage door three times, returning for a third attempt while Shelby was on the phone with police.
"It sounds like somebody is about to kick down the door and come in," she said.
Since the incident, the Mathis family has spent thousands replacing dented garage door panels and will need to repair a cracked back door frame.
"This is loose, this is tilted, you can see this is all cracked from the wall," Shelby noted.
In response, the family has installed security cameras. Their security company suspects the incident may be related to a TikTok challenge in which participants kick doors as a prank, potentially mistaking criminal activity for a joke.
"If they're older than 18, they should know better. Younger than this, they need a little more supervision and a little more guidance to make better choices," Shelby said.
The family filed a police report and hopes those responsible are caught, warning that someone could get seriously hurt if the challenge continues.
