Hundreds of men and women put on high heels on Thursday to show support for domestic violence victims.

The event is put on by WISH, or Women in Safe Homes, a domestic violence shelter in Muskogee.

While it might be an uncomfortable mile, it's an important one.

“A lot different than shoes and boots, a lot different,” said Warner High School student Logan Collins.

Hundreds of people and students from Connors State, Warner High School and Hilldale, walked through downtown Muskogee to show support for domestic violence victims.

Evelyn Hibbs started the walk and runs a shelter for victims and says domestic violence is something that can happen to anyone.

“It's your next-door neighbors, it's people you sit across with at board meetings, it's doctors, lawyers, it's everybody,” she said.

WISH houses women, children and men who are victims of domestic violence.

Hibbs says they focus on not breaking up families but making those families better and healthier.

She says domestic violence is more common than people realize.

“It totally destroys a family, kids grow up in it, they don't know any different so naturally they just come abusers or they marry abusers, and the cycle is just never broken unless there's intervention,” she said.

She says it means a lot to see young people here, who can go back to their high schools and college classes and share this message.

“That's how you stop domestic violence and sexual assault, these kids are the ones that can stop it,” she said.
