The doctor is in: this time we are talking to geriatrician Dr. Chandini Sharma about the dangers of frequent falls with seniors and what to do about them.
Dr. Sharma explained that while some falls are random, frequent falls can indicate deeper health concerns. She listed potential causes, including changes in blood pressure, the effects of new medications, and vision problems. Surprisingly, she noted that bowel and bladder issues, such as infections, are common culprits for falls, especially in bathrooms. Dr. Sharma stressed the importance of identifying the root causes behind falls, as simple solutions are often more common than complex diagnoses.
She suggested that physical therapy is often key to determining whether seniors need assistive devices like canes or walkers. She also highlighted the importance of bathroom safety, as falls frequently occur in that space. In addition, she recommended regular reviews of medications to identify any that could be contributing to balance issues.
Preventing future falls, Dr. Sharma explained, is a gradual process involving multiple steps. Medication reviews and adjustments, along with providing seniors with the proper mobility aids, are crucial in reducing fall risks.
