It was a big night for 10 Tulsa high schools with the new girls' flag football league kicking off Wednesday. They played at several different football fields throughout Tulsa.

Players on both teams said they were a little nervous to play Wednesday but mostly excited because they know how special it is to be part of something new.

These flag football players wore their new jerseys for the first time.

"The fact that it has the NFL logo on it means a lot too," said Cici McIntosh, a player for Webster High School. "I think it makes us all feel a certain special, a certain pride and proud to represent Webster but to also feel great in the uniform."

They strapped on their flags and put in their mouthguards for the first game of the first-of-its-kind league in Tulsa. Players say they've been practicing hard.

"We're out there running, we're conditioning, and we're learning our positions, and then we're also making sure what's the right plays, where we're going, what our routes are," said McIntosh.

"We do different drills," said Savanah Kite, an Edison High School player. "We do offense, defense, as well as learning new plays and routes."

Both teams are focused on victory.

"Just keeping them from scoring—that's basically what defense is," said McIntosh.

"To win," said Kite.

Their favorite part of playing is being part of something bigger.

"Your teammates, I feel definitely your team becomes your family; it's been good getting to know the new girls," said McIntosh.

"I definitely like how it's the team bonding so far, and I think it's been great for all of us," said Kite.

Bailee Bruce, the head coach for Webster High School's team, says girls have been talking about how much they want to play football for years, and she hopes this new league will help the sport grow.

"I hope that it just keeps going. I would love it if middle school girls would get involved at younger ages so by the time they are in high school, they know that terminology; they do know what's going on," she said.

Games are every Wednesday night at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. through November 13. Coach Bruce says the more people who come to watch, the more the league will grow.
