'We're Here To Keep Them Safe': New Security Measures Rolled Out At TPS To Enhance Safety

New security measures have been implemented at Tulsa Public Schools. Every elementary, middle, and high school entrance has looked a little different for about a week now.

While we weren't allowed to show students walking into school, we were able to test out the security features that TPS students will go through every day.

The security features include the weapons detection system and new security wand students will soon get used to. 

TPS communications director, Luke Chitwood said TPS spent the last week getting their students, teachers, and parents used to this new layer of security.

"This felt like a time where we have the technology in place, the expertise and we see the need to just add another layer of security and reinforce that across the district," Chitwood said. 

Chitwood said the security measures aren't completely unfamiliar for students and families because they use the same security screenings at their sporting events.

“There is an adjustment process with any new protocols or procedures, but we're seeing students and families really flexible, and patient, and our team is welcome to students and helping them learn this new procedure," Chitwood said. 

School leaders say the security screenings vary for different campuses. So, depending on the day, some students will be waned in, and others might just walk through the weapons detection system.

Chitwood said there's no need for students to be alarmed and encourages them to continue bringing the essential items they need to study and learn. 

Weapons aren't allowed, and he said their systems can detect vapes and even cellphones.

"We want our families and students to know that they are safe in Tulsa Public Schools," Chitwood said. "We're here to keep them safe in Tulsa Public Schools, and we will continue adapting."

TPS said it will continue monitoring the enhanced screening process to ensure the best safety practices for all students.

These new security measures are in response to recent threats made against the district this school year, which it says have gotten out of hand. Superintendent Dr. Ebony Johnson said any and all threats will be handled seriously.
