The regular lunch items like pizza and chicken nuggets were not on the menu on Tuesday at Dewey Public Schools.

Instead, the students were treated to a hog roast from a world-traveling chef, Chris Murray.

Each box is stuffed with charro beans, cornbread, apple crisp, and the main event, pork from a whole roasted hog.

The hog was put on the smoker at midnight Monday night and roasted for almost ten hours.

Murray traveled to Dewey to cook lunch for students, faculty, and first responders.

He also spent time teaching the kids about what goes into each dish.

“I have cooked for the president of the United States, I used to cook for the Minnesota Vikings,” Murray said. “My favorite thing in life is going into these classrooms and teaching these kids.”

He was brought in by Jackie Dixon, the food service director for the district.

She has been planning this roast since April of last year.

“I felt like it was something that our kids would really relate to,” Dixon said. “We have an FFA so we have kids that have been raising pigs and farm animals and things and just our area being kind of rural, even though we are close to Bartlesville, I just thought our kids would relate to it."

Will Lawrence, a sophomore at Dewey High School, gave the lunch his seal of approval.

"I have tried the beans and the pork, it's really good,” Lawrence said.

It's not your typical school lunch, but it's certainly one to remember.
