Drought conditions are putting a damper on a TU tradition. The bonfire and fireworks are canceled for this year's homecoming pep rally due to the burn ban in effect.
This is one of the only times in recent school history that the university hasn't been able to have the bonfire.
It's a TU tradition that lights up the night before homecoming every year. Students and alumni gather to celebrate the biggest football game of the season. However, this year it will look a little different, thanks to dry conditions and a burn ban, forcing the university to cancel the bonfire portion of Friday's rally.
“I kind of understand it. It is really hot outside, and there is a burn ban,” said student Caiden Catcher.
Rohit Kahnolkar, a senior at TU, says he's still going to enjoy the event, but it won't be the same.
“I was very disappointed. I mean, it's my senior year, so I was really looking forward to it. It's one of my favorite traditions; my whole family's coming up.”
This will be freshman Hattie Eaton's first homecoming on campus.
“I was a little bit disappointed because it's my first year ever, and I was really looking forward to it, but I'm still excited,” she said.
Despite the lack of pyrotechnics, the pep rally will still go on as scheduled. There will be a DJ, food trucks, a performance by the marching band, and live music.
“There's still all of the other events happening, and I don't care one way or the other, usually, about bonfires,” said student Danika Bryant.
The university says there will also be some new surprises this year that students and alumni won't want to miss. They also noted the good news: the event won't be rained out.
