Halloween is less than a week away meaning it is crunch time to find a costume.

Spot Lite Magic & Costumes is the only locally owned, year-round costume store in Tulsa.

"It is very rare," said owner, Sacheen Platten.

There are so many costumes, accessories, and decorations inside she has lost count.

"Gosh I do not know, I mean I would say over 10,000 at least," Platten said.

Each Halloween new costumes emerge. Platten said they go to market in January to shop for inventory.

"Our sales are very movie-driven so whatever is popular usually in the movie theaters translates to big sales for us," she added.

This year Deadpool, Wolverine, and Beetlejuice are among the top picks, but there are some costumes that never go out of style.

"Superheroes are always going to be there," Platten continued saying, "We always sell the traditional firefighter, policemen."

If a packaged costume does not have everything in it, Spot Lite has a whole section of hats, masks, wigs, props, makeup, jewelry, and shoes to add to it.

"We try to ask people, are you wanting to just get a costume or do you want to be fixed up, because if you want to go all out, we will help you with that," said Platten. "We will make sure you have a wig if you need a hat if you need makeup."

The large selection aims to target any budget. Platten said adult costumes do not go over $75 and the average kid's costume is between $20-$30. Every dollar spent means more to the Plattens as it has been their family business for over 25 years.

"Unfortunately, just with the internet and temporary stores, it has really put a hurt to a lot of our independent costume shops," she continued saying, "We just hate that that happens, so we just keep trying to evolve and offer things that keep people coming back."

One of those additions is the free magic shows on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 pm to 7 pm throughout the month of October. It is part of what makes Spot Lite a rare gem and customers are taking notice.

"I had somebody come in and they said I will not go anywhere else because I want to support local, you guys have always taken care of us, and so we want to make sure you stick around," Platten said.

So, when the temporary costume stores disappear after Halloween, the local shop will always be there for its community.

Spot Lite Magic & Costumes is located at 6808 S Memorial Dr. in the Woodland Village Shopping Center. The store is open Monday through Thursday from 10 am to 8 pm, Friday & Saturday from 10 am to 9 pm, and Sunday 12 pm to 7 pm.
