Students at Tulsa's Carver Middle School cast their ballots this week.

While these ones will not be counted by the election board, students told News On 6 it could make a difference in the future.

Students are doing mock elections, from registering to vote to casting their ballots.

The National Junior Honor Society started the process on Monday by getting students registered.

Then, students got their own mock voter registration cards, which they needed to bring with them to cast their vote.

They even set up the polling location like a real one with individual booths and a ballot drop box.

Some students were surprised to learn they needed an ID and that they could not talk about the campaign while in the voting area.

"Everyone's voice counts,” said Greta Sanjuan, 8th grade student. “Everyone’s opinion matters. So, the best thing you can do is go express it, and everyone has an opinion so it's best if you go express it out there and you can do that by voting and deciding the future of your nation."

Their teacher says it's important for these students to learn about how elections work now because they will be more likely to vote in a real election once they are old enough.
