A 21-year-old man is in custody after allegedly stealing a Tulsa Police patrol car and leading authorities on a high-speed chase that ended on the Muskogee Turnpike.
Tulsa Police were responding to a domestic disturbance when an officer got out of their vehicle to help someone at the scene with a hand injury. According to authorities, the suspect Avery Powell then seized the opportunity to take the patrol car, which started the chase.
The chase began in Tulsa, with the suspect heading onto the Muskogee Turnpike. Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) and Broken Arrow Police joined the effort to catch him. OHP ended the chase by spinning out the stolen vehicle.
Powell was arrested at the scene and is being booked into the Wagoner County Jail on charges including resisting arrest.
Additional charges will be filed in Tulsa County once the investigation is complete.
“We were able to get that suspect in custody at the scene, get him out, and he is going to be arrested primarily in Wagoner County first because that’s where they arrested him out there. So he will face charges with them, and then he will face charges with us as we work this investigation and do audit custody affidavits to book him in after he is done in Wagoner County,” said TPD Captain Richard Meulenberg.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
Authorities also reminded the public to remain vigilant and avoid leaving vehicles running unattended. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
