The holidays are supposed to be a time of joy and gratitude. But for many families, it can be a struggle.
“This can be a stressful time of year where there’s a lot of expenses for extra food, presents, all the things,” said Crystal Hahn with Anthem Church in Broken Arrow.
Hahn hopes families can experience the spirit of the season through hundreds of black bags.
“We are taking those out in the community today to families from Union Public Schools who need a Thanksgiving meal this season,” she said.
Meal kits full of Thanksgiving staples like mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and more will soon be in the hands of people who need them.
“We want people to feel like they are seen and known and that they are valued,” said Hahn.
Every year folks at Anthem Church say the need continues to grow, this year more than 225 families will now have a meal for Thanksgiving thanks to their outreach.
Doug and Marcie Demaree say delivering the meals is a simple act, but one that makes a big impact.
“It's just an expression of love to those around us,” said Doug.
Though the food won’t solve all the problems these families are facing, the Demarees hope it provides some relief.
“We’re not gonna be there on Thanksgiving Day with these families when they're sitting down and enjoying time together, and the meal but we just trust that God’s gonna use that to encourage them,” said Doug.
And through a warm greeting…maybe also spark a little joy.
Through the outreach, families are now able to savor both a Thanksgiving meal and a sweet reminder that they are not alone.
