For this week's DC Debrief, News On 6 Political Analyst Scott Mitchell and Washington Bureau Chief Alex Cameron discuss the ongoing activity in the lame-duck session, noting that it is being overshadowed by the "machinations of the Trump transition."
Alex Cameron confirmed that Rep. Markwayne Mullin is indeed considering a run for governor of Oklahoma, stating, "He absolutely is. I sat down within this week, asked him directly, you know, is this something you've been considering? The rumors are out there. And he said, I have."
Cameron explained that Mullin has taken a "methodical approach" to his political decisions in the past, including potential runs for Senate and Speaker of the House.
"He likes to do his research, and he's willing to put in the time to do it, and that's what he's been doing for the last few months with regard to a possible run for governor," Cameron said.
Mullin is "anticipating that in 2026 the US House will revert back to democratic control, and he would go back into what he calls purgatory being in the minority," according to Cameron.
Cameron noted that Mullin's current position in the House leadership and the Republican control of the federal government were initially assumed to be deterrents to a gubernatorial run.
However, Mullin has indicated that he is more focused on "how can I be most effective."
