Volunteers from First Baptist Church and Yale Cleaners are helping people in need stay warm this winter.
Trav's Coats for Kids is underway, and volunteers say this year is busier than usual. Since the drive began two weeks ago, more than 2,000 coats have already found new homes.
Volunteers started preparing for the coat drive in October. When people in need visit the Caring Center at First Baptist, they take a number and are entered into the system to pick out their coats with volunteers like Loretta Shideler.
She oversees the Caring Center and says she loves seeing many members of her church support the cause.
"It's rewarding because we are seeing our church in action," she said. "We don't have to go across the street, we don't even have to go around the world. We have a lot of mission opportunities there also, but we can come right here to our church and serve people and take care of those needs that they have."
Yale Cleaners is still accepting new or gently used coats in both kid and adult sizes. Coats can be dropped off at any Yale Cleaners location.
The Caring Center will be closed Wednesday through Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday. Volunteers will resume coat distribution on Monday, Dec. 2.
