Another batch of frigid cold temperatures are on the way. Oklahoma City paramedics want to ensure people aren’t caught outside without the proper clothing. EMSA field operations supervisor Colin Roy brings 28 years of experience to the table and understands the consequences of winter.
“Oklahoma always gives you something to do,” Roy said. “These are very real, real risks with this kind of weather.”
Roy’s team keeps their warm gear handy.
“Protecting ourselves and making sure we can get to the call,” Roy said.
Subzero wind chills punish those who underestimate the air’s bite.
“It can really penetrate that first and second layer. so, we really talk about putting on an extra three, four layers when the wind chill’s gonna be like that,” Roy said. “You know, we’ve unfortunately seen our fair share of individuals that got caught out in cold weather in the years past and perished because they just weren’t prepared. They just didn’t have that extra blanket in the car. A lot of the things that we see are preventable.”
Roy said everyone must plan and make more winter gear than needed to be safe.
“Think about what could go wrong,” Roy said. “If you don’t have to be out in it, don’t be out in it first and foremost.”
People can’t do anything about the weather – but they can brace for its impact.
“Just do yourself a favor and be ready,” Roy said.
EMSA said to check on older adults often and keep pets inside when the temperatures dip below freezing.
