The City of Oklahoma City is warning of a new scam targeting residents over the phone.
The Oklahoma City Utilities Department says scammers are calling people and demanding payment of past due bills, which are not real.
According to city leaders, the scam involves someone posing as a utility representative making fraudulent calls, and demanding immediate payment for unpaid bills.
The department said it wants Oklahoma City residents to know it will never call demanding payments over the phone.
The city says if utility bills are unpaid, the standard procedure is to issue a visible notice on the home or property at least 48 hours in advance before disconnecting utilities.
If you receive a call demanding payment, the city asks you not to provide any payment details; instead, call the utilities department directly to confirm your account status.
Residents are asked to report any scam calls to the Oklahoma City Police Department.
