Oklahoma City Police say a couple of teenagers were fooling around with an AR-style rifle when it discharged and accidentally killed one of the teens last Summer.
A metro father and son are now charged. The shooting unfolded inside their family's business.
It happened inside a tire shop on Southeast 29th Street and High Avenue owned by Juan Carrillo, Jr.
Police said Carrillo’s 16-year-old son, and the victim Alfredo Sanchez, 17, often played with Carrillo's loaded guns that were left unsecured inside the shop where they all worked.
“A really marvelous person,” said Sanchez’s mother, Ana Lilia Sanchez.
In July of 2024, News 9 visited with heartbroken mother Ana Lilia Sanchez as she planned her son's unexpected funeral.
“Even though he is so young, he's done so much while on Earth. That's how I will remember him,” said Ana Lilia.
Alfredo Sanchez was working at Carillo’s tire shop on Southeast 29th Street and High Avenue when he was accidentally shot in the head.
Investigators say Juan Carrillo, Jr. called 911 and reported his son had accidentally shot Sanchez---his best friend as they waited for lunch.
Following her son's death Sanchez's mother made a plea to the public.
“If you know anything about my son's accident, please speak up, open up your heart, and speak so justice is done,” said Ana Lilia.
More than seven months later Carrillo was charged with child neglect for failing to protect his son and Sanchez from harm "by failing to adequately store firearms from access."
Carrillo's son, a minor who News 9 is not naming, was charged with manslaughter.
According to court filings police recovered cellphone video that showed Carrillo's son and his friends on several occasions---playing with loaded guns, pointing them at each other and pulling the trigger, and loading and unloading them.
Jail records indicate the father and son have not been arrested.
A spokesperson with the Oklahoma County District Attorney's office said the 16-year-old is charged as a minor.
