Gov. Kevin Stitt’s decision to replace three State Board of Education members has drawn mixed reactions, with some education advocacy groups applauding the move.
“We've had a board up there that's been a rubber stamp board that has never questioned anything that has come across the desk and has forgotten their role, that they are there to manage what's going on with the department and the superintendent and question things, said Founder of Oklahoma Rural Schools Coalition Erika Wright.
Why are education advocates applauding?
Wright said previous board members never stood up to Superintendent Ryan Walters.
She said these appointments could lead to a board of education that is more focused on reading, math, supporting teachers, and creating a positive environment for children to learn in.
This is something Governor Stitt addressed on Tuesday.
Gov. Stitt addresses concerns over the replacements
Stitt says this change was the best decision.
“When I see our NAEP scores not improving when I see things that are messed up or wrong or kids being used as political pawns for some political stunt, it’s just frustrating,” said Stitt.
He is hoping it helps prepare kids for college while getting them ready to compete in the workforce.
Advocacy groups applaud the change but are skeptical
“We have got to have some individuals that have the courage to stand up boldly, to say no to some of the things that are coming through, and to provide better governance for the board that oversees, the public schools in our state,” said Wright.
All three appointed board members lack an education background.
Wright says this is concerning and she would prefer to have someone more familiar with education policy.
