Our Blood Institute (OBI) has extended its emergency blood shortage systemwide as another wave of winter weather disrupts donations, the organization announced Tuesday.
For the second consecutive week, below-freezing temperatures and winter precipitation have forced the cancellation of blood drives and donation appointments, threatening the blood supply for hospitals and patients in critical need.
“Our donors are true champions, but this winter weather has hit us with a painful one-two punch,” said Dr. John Armitage, president and CEO of Our Blood Institute. “We’re asking everyone who can safely travel to step into the ring and help us fight this shortage. Patients are counting on you.”
OBI remains open and is urging donors to reschedule appointments and visit donation centers as soon as it is safe to travel. They said platelet and whole blood donations are urgently needed, as platelet supplies—critical for cancer patients, surgical procedures, and trauma care—only last about five days.
“The need for both donation types never stops, no matter the weather,” OBI said in a statement.
To encourage participation, successful donors will receive a limited-edition, superhero-themed T-shirt. Eligible donors—those who are at least 16 years old with a minimum weight requirement—can schedule an appointment at obi.org/emergency or call 877-340-8777. Walk-ins are also welcome.
