The same day an EF-1 tornado struck the city, people living in Ada undertook a massive campaign to help each other.

ECU students gave their time later in the day.

Elsewhere, Pastor Cary Gerth offered anyone a free meal.

"We started by doing sandwiches," he said. His wife said they hoped to be a blessing to somebody.

"It's devastating," he added. "It hurts to grow up here and to see the devastation."

Emergency officials have reported only one injury, and no deaths.

But homeowners are still left with piles of debris and extensive repairs.

"I am very grateful to them because it is a lot of work," said Horacio Guevara Morales, who lives in Ada with his family. A father and son chainsaw team came to help with his backyard for free. "It is a lot of work for just one. One worries about the things that happen."
