Oklahoma recently saw a record number of flu-related hospitalizations, leading to numerous school closures and cleaning days. While cases are declining, health officials say precautions remain necessary.
Physician Assistant Janine Smith joined News 9 to discuss steps people can take to reduce the risks of flu season.
Smith emphasized the importance of getting a flu shot each season. While the vaccine does not guarantee complete immunity, it helps reduce the severity of illness and prevent its spread.
Some may mistake flu symptoms for seasonal allergies. Those unsure should look for fever, chills, nausea, vomiting and headaches—symptoms that often resemble those of COVID-19.
Though the flu remains a seasonal concern, it is not considered a pandemic. People can continue their regular activities, including spring break plans, while taking appropriate precautions.
