Carpenter Square Theatre is celebrating Women’s History Month with its latest production, Silent Sky, a play highlighting the achievements of a groundbreaking female astronomer.
The play, written by Lauren Gunderson, tells the true story of Henrietta Leavitt, a woman who discovered how to measure the distance between stars despite not being allowed to use a telescope. Leavitt’s contributions were later recognized as pivotal in the field of astronomy after she was initially denied credit for her discoveries.
Rick Allen Lippert, Board Chair of Carpenter Square Theatre, called the production both “uplifting and joyous,” with dazzling lighting effects, wonderful sound effects, and a top-notch cast.
“There’s nothing like live performance,” Lippert said. “This play is especially uplifting because of the rewards that Henrietta Leavitt received in her lifetime and just beyond.”
The show runs through next weekend with performances on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. (featuring half-price tickets), Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and a closing matinee on Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on their website.
Following Silent Sky, the theater will present Women of a Certain Age, a comedy about four college friends in their 60s reuniting for an annual gathering. Additionally, a fundraiser on Mar. 29 will feature a 10-minute play festival and live performances.
