With storm season just beginning and damage to homes already happening, it raises concerns on how large of a financial impact the new 25% tariff will have on roofing supplies and its customers.
The tariff on goods imported from China, Mexico, and Canada took effect on Tuesday.
Talks about tariffs have some people on edge and others really uncertain about what to expect.
“I think there will be an impact from the tariffs,” said roofing customer Jarrad McMillan while visiting McCann’s Roofing & Construction.
McMillan is not alone and shares the same thought as many others throughout the country.
He said he is not letting this stop him from paying for what he needs.
“If the cost of my roof is going to increase due to these tariffs, then that is part of the cost of doing business. I personally don't think that these tariffs are just going to drastically increase prices overnight,” said McMillan.
Owner of McCann’s Roofing and Construction, Eric Brown, agrees.
“We do forecasting. And so we look at that all the time. And as of right now, you know, there's not been a huge shift,” added Eric. “As a business owner. You know, I always have to look out for cost. And, you know how I can help the customer the most so that is the real issue.”
Brown added there is always concern when it comes to labor and materials.
According to the Tile Roofing Industry Alliance, there is unease over the 25% tariffs on roofing materials.
TRI Alliance said that in the United States, tile roofing is a 2.85 billion dollar industry that continues to grow.
Brown said another thing he does as a business owner is factor in cost for his customers.
“There's everything from Cedar that we use for our pergolas to Velux skylights. You know, those are, manufactured here in the United States primarily,” said Brown.
According to the Associated Press (AP) it is unknown when prices will rise, but more than likely, the impact will be on certain food items.
