The Oklahoma Senate has approved Senate Bill 523, a measure designed to enhance law enforcement presence for major events across the state. The bill, introduced by Senator Darrell Weaver (R-Moore), was passed Monday and will now advance to the House of Representatives.

Strengthening Law Enforcement Cooperation

SB 523 grants Oklahoma sheriffs, deputy sheriffs, and reserve deputy sheriffs the same powers and duties outside their county of employment when performing duties in another county. The bill is aimed at ensuring law enforcement agencies can collaborate more effectively during special events or times when a greater police presence is needed.

“This measure will ensure our law enforcement agencies can work together to provide additional coverage and support for special events or in times where additional police presence is necessary,” said Weaver. “SB 523 clarifies language within our state laws related to liability, ensuring that Oklahoma law enforcement agencies can effectively operate across county lines while maintaining the authority and protection they need to keep our communities safe.”

Liability and Coverage

Under the provisions of the bill, liability for law enforcement officers will remain with their county of employment, even when performing duties in another county.

Preparing for the 2028 Olympics

The legislation was developed following consultations with Sheriff Tommie Johnson and the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office, who are planning to provide law enforcement coverage for the 2028 Olympic events in Oklahoma City.

“The Olympic events coming to Oklahoma City will require additional law enforcement presence due to the size of the event and number of expected visitors,” Weaver said. “With this legislation in place, our county agencies will be able to utilize neighboring forces to ensure adequate coverage for the Olympics and other large-scale events set to come to our state.”

Next Steps

The bill now heads to the House of Representatives, where it will be sponsored by Rep. Robert Manger (R-Oklahoma City).
