The Weatherford boys basketball team just won their first-ever state title and the town is beyond excited, but nowhere is there more excitement than here at the Homestead of Weatherford assisted living center.

“It’s a sports town, we get a lot of support from the community,” said Coach Derrick Bull, Weatherford boys head basketball coach.

It’s an especially exciting time for the residents at Homestead Assisted Living Center.

“You have to start turning on these games, you have to get them in the living room, get them on so we can come out and watch them together,” said Elaina Dewbre, life enrichment coordinator at Homestead Assisted Living Center.

Throughout the season, for every game, the residents at Homestead were in front of the television cheering on their team.

Not surprisingly when the team won the 4A state title last weekend, the town of Weatherford went crazy.

“It’s a buzz around the town, everywhere we go people are telling us congratulations, honking at us, I mean it’s really special just for our community,” said Ethan Sage, with the Weatherford basketball team.

After winning, priority number one for the team was a stop at Homestead, to say thank you and spend a little time with their biggest fans.

“Getting to come and hang out with them a little bit and just to show our appreciation is pretty neat,” said Coach Bull.

“Just to get to meet them, I mean they have been watching them on TV, so how awesome is it that they get to come out here and meet them in person and do activities with them,” said Dewbre.

After the initial excitement, the residents wanted to test the team’s skills on their turf, with a friendly game of bingo. But clearly, there was a home-team advantage.

“I sat down and kind of visited, and they’re all nice people, we get along, but other than that, I haven’t won yet, but that does make it better if I get a win,” said Tate Sage, Weatherford basketball player.

The day was filled with fun and smiles, but unfortunately, against the experts, the team didn’t fare so well at Bingo, but they did say that they would be back for a rematch.
