Body camera footage shows Moore officers approaching the home, with guns drawn, and ordering the man to drop the weapon and show the officers his hands. In the video, the man continued to walk toward officers, holding what officers described as a “large machete.”
Captain Seay said officers backed away from the home as the video changed to show the dashboard camera. He said that officers commanded the suspect, identified by police as James Collier, to drop the weapon 20 times.
Seay narrated in the video that Collier continued to walk toward officers with the machete in a threatening manner. As officers backed away and Collier appeared to approach, as seen in the video, Moore officers fired, striking Collier.
The video then shows officers treating Collier after the shooting. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. The 2 stabbing victims were badly hurt, but are expected to survive.
The officers involved were placed on administrative assignment. Captain Seay said the investigation is ongoing and will be handed over to the Cleveland County District Attorney’s office for review. After that, an internal affairs investigation will be conducted.
