Authorities say school is safe after reported gunfire near Spencer Elementary School

Authorities say there is no danger after gunfire was reported near Spencer Elementary School. 

Spencer Police Department said they think someone shot a gun into the air in a neighborhood near the school. 

The scene is near North Douglas Boulevard and 50th Street in Spencer. 

Spencer PD said there is no danger on school grounds. 

The following message was shared with Spencer Elementary School families:

"Due to reports of possible gunshots nearby, the school has been put on “secure” status this afternoon. Please note that at this time, the report remains unconfirmed. As a reminder, “secure” means no one is allowed in or out of the building, but activities within the school continue as usual. The students are all safe, but in the spirit of transparency, we wanted to make you aware of the situation."
