Q&A with Jason Lowe: Oklahoma County’s New District 1 Commission

Jason Lowe, the newly sworn-in Oklahoma County Commissioner, shares his thoughts on his historic appointment as the first African American man to serve in the role, the challenges ahead, and his vision for the future of the county.

Q: How does it feel to take on this new role?

Jason Lowe: “I am deeply honored to take on the district 1 County Commissioner role. I'm ready to work with my colleagues to get things done.”

Q: You’re transitioning from a state representative to county commissioner. What’s the biggest change for you?

Jason Lowe: “It's kind of different; I think I can make a bigger impact as one of three, rather than one out of 149. I've served eight years in the House, I was ranking member of the house judiciary committee, and I plan to bring three things to this job, the law, the facts and the evidence and I'm ready to work with my colleagues to get things done.”

Q: What are some of your priorities?

Jason Lowe: "My district is a priority. I want to make sure everyone has a great opportunity to succeed and that’s what I’m working towards. I look forward to working alongside my fellow county officers to find solutions that will prioritize the well-being of all Oklahoma County residents, partnering with municipalities in my district to improve much-needed infrastructure projects and work towards creating support for our underserved populations in the Oklahoma County jail.”

Q: What specifically do you want to address as county commissioner?

Jason Lowe: " We want to make sure we have a humane jail; we want to make sure that our roads and bridges are repaired. You know, I think this position is less political than the state representative position, no one cares about your political party when dealing with roads and bridges and that's what I want to focus on, every single citizen in district one and Oklahoma County to get the job done for them.”

Q: Finally, what message do you want to send to the residents of Oklahoma County as you begin your term?

Jason Lowe: " I love Oklahoma County. I've seen the challenges we're having in Oklahoma County, and I want to make a difference.”
