A popular Guthrie fundraiser is back for another year, and it’s all for a great cause. Lisa New, founder of Helping Community Paws and Claws, appeared on the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch to share details about her organization’s upcoming garage sale fundraiser, which supports spay and neuter assistance efforts in Logan County.
“The garage sale is something that we've done for the last three years. It's gotten bigger every year. And if it hadn't been for the community, we wouldn't even have a garage sale,” New said. “So I want to thank the community for donating those items. And every penny goes to our spay and neuter assistance program in Logan County.”
The event will take place May 13 through May 17, running Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
A special gesture is planned for wildfire victims. “We would like to extend our offer to the wildfire victims to come on Saturday at 3 o'clock—they can have whatever they want,” New said.
One of the garage sale’s biggest draws is the $5 laundry basket deal, where shoppers can fill an entire basket with as many items as they can fit. “We proved it—we raised $10,000 last year,” New shared. “You can get a lot in a laundry basket. And we don't go through any of those items, so you get some treasures. So it's a good deal for me. It's a good deal for you, helping these pets.”
For those looking to learn more or help out, New pointed viewers to the organization’s website: “We do have a donation link there, and we have a wish list on Amazon and Chewy. And if you guys would like to help with that goal, you can always do monetary donations if you can't come to the sale," New said. "But I highly recommend everybody to come to the sale because we'll have food trucks there. So come and shop and eat, and it's going to be a really big event.”
The fundraiser is fueled almost entirely by donated items. “Every bit of that comes from donations. So we've been collecting donations for about six months. We have to have a lot of items at $5 a basket for five days. It's pretty overwhelming,” New said. “But without the donations from the community, the community is amazing. They know what we do, and they support us 100%. And without them and our volunteers—we have some amazing volunteers, too, that come. Without them, we wouldn't make it.”
